Jammu and Kashmir Braces for Heavy Rain, Snow as Western Disturbance Approaches

The Jammu and Kashmir is expected to witness widespread rainfall and snowfall over the next 36 hours as a strong Western Disturbance moves into the region, according to the Meteorological Department in Srinagar.

Authorities have issued advisories warning of potential weather-related disruptions, including landslides and flash floods, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Key Announcements / Highlights

  • Moderate to heavy rainfall forecast between April 3 and 4
  • Snowfall expected in higher-altitude regions
  • Thunderstorms, hailstorms and gusty winds likely
  • Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph
  • Risk of landslides, flash floods and waterlogging

Weather Forecast Details

The weather office has predicted generally cloudy conditions with intermittent rain across both Kashmir and Jammu divisions. Higher reaches are expected to receive fresh snowfall, which may affect road connectivity and travel.

Key mountain passes such as Zojila, Sinthan Top, Mughal Road, Sadhna Top and Razdan Top are likely to see snowfall accumulation, increasing the risk of temporary closures or traffic restrictions.

Officials also indicated that some areas may experience short but intense spells of heavy rain, raising concerns about waterlogging in low-lying zones.

Official Statement

According to the Meteorological Department, the approaching weather system could bring thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds during the late afternoon and evening hours. Authorities have urged residents and travellers to remain cautious, particularly in landslide-prone and mountainous regions.

Context / Background

A Western Disturbance is a weather system originating in the Mediterranean region that brings winter and early spring precipitation to northern India. While it is essential for replenishing water sources, intense systems can also trigger extreme weather events.

The region had recorded a rainfall deficit of around 34 per cent in March, making the current spell significant for water availability, though its intensity raises safety concerns.

Public Impact

The forecast is likely to affect daily life, especially in hilly and remote areas. Road travel may be disrupted due to snowfall and landslides, while urban areas could face temporary waterlogging.

Farmers may benefit from improved soil moisture, but heavy rain and hail could damage standing crops in some areas.

Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve between April 5 and 6, followed by another spell of rain and snowfall from April 7 to 9. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with official forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
